The first step in the dental implant process is an initial consultation and thorough dental examination. Dr. Viccaro or Dr. Lo will assess your oral health, discuss your dental history, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. This may involve taking X-rays or 3D images of your mouth to evaluate the condition of your jawbone and the position of your remaining teeth. They will also discuss the procedure in detail, answer any questions you have, and develop a personalized treatment plan.
The next step is the surgical placement of the dental implant into your jawbone. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. A small incision is made in your gum to expose the bone, and a hole is drilled to accommodate the implant. The implant is then inserted into the hole and your gum is stitched closed. Over the coming months, the implant will fuse with your jawbone in a process known as osseointegration.
Once osseointegration is complete, an abutment is attached to the implant. This serves as a connector between the implant and the replacement tooth or teeth. Finally, a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the abutment, completing the restoration. The result is a natural-looking, functional tooth that blends seamlessly with your smile.
Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. They are designed to fuse with bone, and because they become a part of you, they look natural. This can significantly improve your self-esteem and confidence.
Unlike tooth-supported bridges, dental implants don't require reducing other teeth. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving long-term oral health.
Dental implants are very durable and can last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. They eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep them in place.
